The deputy mayor of the Estepona Treasury area, José María Ayala, confirmed this Friday 13th November, during the presentation of the City Council's tax ordinances for 2021, the decrease in the Real Estate Tax (IBI) and in the garbage rate, that add up to a cumulative reduction of 20% for all citizens, registered or not registered.

IBI is an abbreviation of “Impuesto sobre Bienes Inmuebles”, literally translated as “property tax”. It is a tax that applies to both residents and non-residents. In some parts of Spain, it is known as SUMA. All property owners must pay this tax every year. It is levied by the town hall where your property is located and it is paid once a year (normally due in August through to November).

To the mentioned earlier reduction must be added the discount of 3% -both in the IBI as for the Economic Activities Tax (IAE) and the garbage rate- for those who have direct debit payment of their receipt and pay it within the period of voluntary payment. As reported by the head of the Treasury, the average IBI receipt of the Esteponeros has been reduced, since 2011, from 700 to 560 euros.

The mayor recalled that, in total, the City Council allocates a budget of more than 4.2 million euros for bonuses to the IBI and garbage. In relation to the second, retirees and long-term unemployed registered in the locality will be exempt from payment.

Ayala explained that these measures continue the path of not raising taxes that began in 2012 and remarked that “the day this city does not have to use the important economic efforts that are directed at the moment to pay that inherited debt, the city it will have sufficient financial resources to continue the pace of investment, continue to improve public facilities and infrastructures and, then, carry out the largest tax cut in this city, with a reduction of IBI by half ”.

The government team's forecast is that the existing debt in 2011, of 300 million euros, according to the City Council, will be reduced to 70 million once the 2021 exercise ends, which will imply having reduced it by 76%.

The head of the Economic area has indicated that these tax reduction measures are possible thanks to the fact that the City Council maintains a policy of rigor and control of spending, being "one of the municipalities in Spain that makes the most public investment per inhabitant."

For next year, the fees for the activities and courses of the municipal delegation of Culture will also experience reductions. To do this, discounts of 50% are established in prices for those who are in a situation of long-term unemployment, retirees, large families and people with disabilities, among other beneficiaries.
